Issue 7-11-2016 - The Big Issue (1)

The Big Issue is a UK-based street paper that supports the homeless, the vulnerably housed asnd those seeking to escape poverty. Vendors normally buy the magazine for £1.25 and sell to the public for £2.50. We are using Zinio digital editions to create additonal revenue opportunities to fund our street-based and pastoral care services for our vendors. We are a social enterprise company and all revenues go to support the vulnerable communities we serve. Our goal is to move our vendors away from dependency and towards full time employment

IN THIS ISSUECORRESPONDENCESunny dispositionWhile staying in sunny Herne Bay over the summer I had the pleasure of buying The Big Issue from Marianna, outside Morrisons. Her cheerfulness and ready smile always brightened up my trip to the supermarket. So thank you Marianna and keep on smiling. May God bless you.Kathryn Asiku (back in Uganda now!)Birthday messageHaving just read the 25th special anniversary edition, I was angry at seeing Theresa (not actually elected by anyone) May included. What a load of sanctimonious, hypocritical crap. The reason for the massive increase in homelessness is directly down to Tory policies. She says she is announcing £40m to prevent and tackle the causes of homelessness, and this will include £20m for local authorities to pilot homelessness initiatives. What about the hundreds of millions the Tories have taken…3 min
IN THIS ISSUEBob is just the jobAs a new buyer of The Big Issue I just wanted to express how much I have been enjoying reading your magazine. I have recently read (and absolutely loved) all of James Bowen’s “Bob” books and up until then had no idea how The Big Issue worked, how it helped the homeless – and of course the stresses that the sellers face on a day to day basis. The books and, of course, The Big Issue magazines have opened my eyes to a different world that I of course knew was out there but didn’t really think about. I now feel so bad for previously jumping to stupid conclusions as to why the sellers were there.I would also like to say that I think the magazine does a fantastic job in…1 min
IN THIS ISSUEBrexit’s a big deal. We all need to be involvedOn the night of the judges’ Brexit ruling, I went to listen to a number of schoolkids. They were taking part in a public speaking contest. They were all really good. Really good.Public speaking is hard. Yet there they were, from 12 to 18 years old, up in front of a crowd making smart, engaging points. I liked them all. Some of them mentioned Donald Trump. None were supportive. Trump, it appears, dominates the thoughts of a good number of British schoolkids. NSPCC said Trump fears are leading to a rise in anxiety amongst children. From what I’ve heard Trump has led to a rise in quality playground gags. Will we be laughing later this week when the vote is in?Trump’s a self-aggrandising, deplorable, thin-skinned boor. He looks totally incapable and also…3 min
IN THIS ISSUENEWS…FUR THE LOVE OF BOBStars were out in force for the premiere of A Street Cat Named Bob in London, with the duch*ess of Cambridge adding her royal seal of approval. Draped across James’ shoulders, Bob rocked the red carpet, with stars Luke Treadaway, Ruta Gedmintas and Joanne Froggatt pawsing for selfies with hundreds of fans. He looked nonplussed when Princess Kate stopped to say hello – maybe he knows shes more of a dog person.COLD FACTSDepicting life for homeless people, A Street Cat Named Bob could not come at a more relevant time. New figures show shocking increases in homelessness. In Manchester numbers have risen 10-fold in five years, with Shelter finding 1000 children in emergency accommodation – double that of the same period in 2015. In Dublin homelessness…1 min
IN THIS ISSUEHow to love your heartBa-boom, ba-boom, ba-boom, ba-boom, ba-boom. The sound of a beating heart, powerfully performing its life-preserving service day after day. It beats without a break, no matter whether we’re asleep or awake. It’s already beating on the first day of our lives and continues until we draw our last breath. But how much do we actually know about what it’s doing, and how often do we stop to appreciate the hard graft it is putting in to keep us alive? The heart of a healthy 20-year-old contracts somewhere between 60 and 80 times a minute. If it is well trained, it can beat quite significantly more slowly when its owner is at rest. And this bundle of muscle is practically bursting with energy. The best way to gain an idea of its…2 min
